About the Program

The primary purpose of the Texas Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST)Training Program is to improve the administration and consistency of DWI investigation and enforcement by providing FREE training to licensed Texas Peace Officers. The overall mission of the program is to decrease alcohol-related crashes, injuries, and deaths by promoting DWI deterrence and enforcement proficiency. This program utilizes full time program staff, in addition to contracted adjunct instructors to administer courses throughout the state.Funding for this program is provided by the Texas Department of Transportation.

 

















 

Texas SFST Program Courses

·8-hour SFST Refresher Course- This course uses the nationally standardized SFST curriculum and is designed toimprove the administration and overall consistency of the Standardized Field Sobriety Test(SFST) battery by keeping officers up to date and proficient.

















·8-hour Fundamentals of DWI Investigation &Enforcement Course-The goal of the Fundamentals of DWI Investigation & Enforcement course is to improve the skills of law enforcement officers in detecting and arresting impaired driving offenders and preparing cases for prosecution. This course was designed tosupplement other impaired driving enforcement courses such as the SFST Practitioner, SFST Refresher, and the Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement(ARIDE) courses.

















·24-hour SFST Practitioner Course- This training course uses the nationally standardized SFST curriculum and prepares Texas Peace Officers to administer and interpret the results of the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing battery. This course is offered to bridge the gap in officers who attended the Basic Peace Officer Course in Texas prior to January 1, 2005 when this course was mandated to be included in all Texas BPOCs.

















·50-hour SFST Instructor Course- The Texas SFST Training Program offers a FREE 50-hour Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor Course to licensed Texas Peace Officers who are TCOLE certified instructors. This training follows the nationally standardized SFST curriculum and prepares Texas Peace Officers to instruct fellow officers on howto properly administer and interpret the results of the SFST battery.

 

















Program Highlights

·The SFST Refresher Course is the program’s longest running course, with continuous funding since FY 2011

·Over 10,000 officers have been trained in the SFST Refresher Course by the program since its inception

·The program developed and introduced the Fundamentals of DWI Investigation &Enforcement Course in FY 2015

·Since the commencement of the Fundamentals of DWI Investigation & Enforcement Course in the Spring of 2015, over 600 officers have been trained

·The program obtained additional funding and introduced the 24-hour SFST Practitioner Course and SFST Instructor Course at the beginning of FY 2016

































How to Host a Class

Agencies and prosecutors interested in hosting any class should contact one of the following members of the Texas SFST Program team. We require a minimum of 10-15 licensed Texas Peace Officers for the SFST Refresher and Fundamentals of DWI Investigation & Enforcement Classes and encourage multiple agencies to attend the training. Please contact us for details on class minimums and requirements. All training is provided absolutely free of charge due to grant funding by TxDOT.
